This time around, the franchise will have a new director. Drew Goddard, known for his work on Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale, will take the helm. He will also co-write the screenplay with Sarah Esberg under their company, Goddard Textiles. Though Lana Wachowski will not be directing, she will remain involved as an executive producer, ensuring the film stays true to the spirit of the franchise.

Warner Bros. president of production, Jesse Ehrman, praised Goddard’s vision, explaining that his new approach would honor the original world created by Lana and Lilly Wachowski while offering a fresh perspective: “Drew came to us with a new idea that we believe would be an incredible way to continue The Matrix story, rooted in his love for the series and characters.”

Goddard shared his excitement about stepping into the Matrix world: “The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me daily, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”

Though specific plot details have not been revealed, fans can expect The Matrix 5 to explore new themes while respecting the legacy of the franchise. With the movie still in development, there’s no official release date yet, but rumors suggest production is well underway.

As for the cast, it remains unclear whether the iconic duo Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) will reprise their roles. Additionally, newer faces like Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Priyanka Chopra Jonas may return, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

While The Matrix Resurrections underperformed both critically and commercially, grossing only $157.3 million globally, fans are hopeful that this new installment will return the franchise to its former glory. Only time will tell if The Matrix 5 can recapture the magic of its predecessors.
