Is The Trunch Movie Releasing in 2024? Miss Trunchbull Film Speculation Explained

Speculation about a new Matilda prequel titled The Trunch has fans buzzing, thanks to a viral poster circulating on Facebook. The supposed film claims to delve into the early life of Miss Trunchbull, the fearsome headmistress from Matilda, with a planned release on Amazon Prime Video in November 2024.

The Viral Post and Movie Poster

The post features a poster for The Trunch, showing an AI-generated image of a young girl with pigtails, meant to represent a 10-year-old Agatha Trunchbull. The film’s description teases an origin story narrated by Danny DeVito, who directed and starred in the original 1996 Matilda movie. According to the fake synopsis, the movie is set in 1964, following a young Trunchbull attending a strict boarding school, where her iron will and love for discipline begin to take shape.

Despite the excitement surrounding this potential prequel, the movie and poster are entirely fabricated. The poster, while creative, was merely the work of imaginative fans, and no official plans for a new Matilda film have been announced.

Will a Matilda Sequel Ever Be Released?

While The Trunch is not happening, the idea of revisiting the Matilda universe isn’t new. Danny DeVito, who played Matilda’s father, Mr. Wormwood, in the 1996 film, has long expressed interest in making a sequel. DeVito once shared that he wanted to create Matilda 2 while Mara Wilson, who played Matilda, was still a child. Though that window of opportunity has passed, DeVito hasn’t given up hope, suggesting the possibility of a storyline involving Matilda as an adult with a child of her own.

DeVito also hinted at other ways of revisiting Matilda. In an interview, he revealed that he and Mara Wilson had planned to perform a live version of Matilda with the New Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra before the Hollywood strikes disrupted the project. However, DeVito mentioned that they still hope to move forward with this live performance once the strike ends.

Future Roald Dahl Adaptations

Although a Matilda sequel isn’t currently in the works, fans of Roald Dahl can look forward to other upcoming adaptations. One of Dahl’s other classic works, The Twits, is being adapted into a film, with Phil Johnston directing and actors like Natalie Portman and Emilia Clarke providing voice roles. The Twits focuses on a mischievous couple who torment each other and their pet monkeys, bringing another one of Dahl’s beloved stories to life.

As for Matilda, the original 1996 film remains a cherished classic and is currently available for streaming on Netflix. While a return to the world of Crunchem Hall may not be imminent, the continuing popularity of Dahl’s stories ensures that the legacy of Matilda will endure for years to come.
