Witness the Beauty of 2023’s Most Breathtaking Births and a Mother’s Unconditional Love for Her Child

Childbirth is a unique and diverse experience that varies greatly from one family to another. No two birth stories are the same. To capture and preserve these simultaneously challenging and joyful moments, birth photographers take on the roles of both documentarians and artists, presenting labor, delivery, and postpartum experiences in an authentic yet aesthetically pleasing manner. The International Association of Professional Birth Photographers (IAPBP) recently concluded their 2020 Image of the Year competition, recognizing and celebrating the creatives who excel in chronicling all aspects of birth photography.

The competition was open to over 1,100 online IAPBP community members residing in 51 countries around the world. They awarded a first-place winner as well as top photographs in categories including Labor, Delivery, Postpartum, and Birth Details, along with members’ favorite images. In 2020, Jessica Vink of VI-Photography took home the top prize for her striking portrait titled “A Moment of Silence.” The image features a mother and her baby taking a well-deserved nap on the couch. Surrounding them are the realities of newborn motherhood, depicted in a beautiful and truthful way, devoid of glamorization. This image exemplifies the essence of birth photography at its finest.
